In recent months, Malaysians have been shocked with announcement of increases in toll rates, LRT & ERL ticket prices, and several more things. The effect of GST, which was implemented in April last year, is being felt acutely across many middle and lower middle class households across the nation. It has no doubt caused many people to worry about how they will be covering the extra costs, especially those than have to support a family.
One of our ministers has therefore suggested that Malaysians take on an extra job to cover expenses. Although it may not sound like the most excellent answer to the current condition, but it is no doubt the only practical thing that can be done. If you can’t think of any way to start earning extra, here are some ideas:
A) Use your skill
If you have an experience or skill in things like graphic design, event planning, writing, web programming, photography and such you might want to check out websites which offer work from home jobs on a project basis. All you have to do is register an account and use your available slots to bid for jobs you are interested in. What’s even more attractive is that most of the employers are from foreign countries so you stand a chance to earn in USD, Euros, Yen and SGDs.
B) Start an Online Business
Selling online may be difficult at first but if you can find a target niche market and meet their needs, you are in for big benefits. In order to begin, you can always start a simple blog to advertise your products. It can be small items like handmade gifts, or larger more expensive items like laptops or computers.
C) Be an Errand Runner
There is currently only one online Malaysian website where you can sign up as an errand runner. This website, called GoGet lets you choose from several requests by clients who will pay you to complete tasks like renewing road tax and car insurances, delivering flowers and birthday gifts, standing in long lines, buying and delivering food , helping pregnant mothers, etc. For now, GoGet only covers Bangsar and its surrounding areas. You can always start a similar service among your friends and family in your own neighbourhood first.
D) Be a Uber Driver
Dedicated Uber or GrabCar drivers can earn several hundred in one night if they decide to fulfill as many request as possible. However, in order to be a ride sharing driver, you should have a car and it has to be of a minimum age and certain model so that it projects standard and class.
E) Be a Mystery Shopper or Market Survey Respondent.
Every mystery shopping trip pays between RM40- RM100 per trip and all you have to do is follow the guidelines on what to observe. Alternatively you can also join market survey sessions where they pay up to RM200 for one to two hours of your feedback as a consumer.
