Study Conducted On Utility Tariffs For SOHO Homes - Noh Omar
The government is studying the need to have standardised electricity and water tariffs for residential units in all housing projects with the SOHO (Small office Small Home) concept in the country.

Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Tan Sri Noh Omar said at present the housing units in these premises were subjected to the same tariffs as commercial units which were higher than ordinary residential units.

"At present, many housing developers mixed residential (units) with commercial, in the end those who live in the residential units have to pay commercial rates.

"So people who live in these apartments are asking why they have to pay commercial rates, when they live in a home...there have been many complaints to us," he said in a press conference held after launching the Ceylonz Suites residential units here today.

The 39-storey building in Jalan Raja Chulan was jointly developed by Koperasi Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia Berhad and Exsim Group Company.

Commenting further, Noh said the study was being conducted by the ministry and the National Housing Department.

In a separate development, Noh said about 4,000 rental homes under the government's pioneer studio apartment project would be built on the ministry's 5.2-hectare land in Mukim Batu, Gombak from next year, before the initiative is extended to other locations.

He urged private property developers to work with the government to develop such housing projects as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Budget 2017 recently.

"They can build, collect rental, and the government can give the bank surety or guarantee for reduced rental, this is one of the concepts," he said.
