An official bilateral agreement is to be signed in December by Malaysia and Singapore on the high-speed rail project linking the two countries.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Singaporean counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, are expected to witness the signing of the legally-binding agreement during their annual talks early next month, the New Straits Times reported.

Construction is expected to start in 2018, with operations beginning by 2026.

The project would cut travelling time between Kuala Lumpur and the city state to 90 minutes.

Railway companies from China, Japan and Europe have long expressed interest in this major infrastructure project.

Bernama reported that Najib would discuss the project during a meeting with Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Wednesday.

Najib will be making a three-day working visit to Japan starting tomorrow at the invitation of Abe and this will be his fourth visit to the Land of the Rising Sun since taking over as prime minister in 2008.
