Fire safety in a high-rise building
Fire safety plays a significant role in the overall safety of a building. While many are aware of the safety measures in landed properties, many are still in the dark when it comes to fire safety in a condominium or apartment.
The mere presence of smoke detectors and sprinklers does not guarantee a safe environment. Below are some of the things to keep in mind to ensure maximum fire safety in a high-rise building.

Make sure your condominium or apartment has all the fire safety features mentioned below and more importantly, these features are in working condition and well-maintained.

1. Check for the presence of functioning hose reels and fire alarms.
2. Risers are installed to help firefighters gain access to water, much like a fire hydrant.
3. A dry riser is installed for buildings 18 metres above the ground while a wet riser is installed for buildings 20 meters above the ground.
4. Look for the ‘keluar’ or ‘exit’ sign and be sure to remember the direction of the exit from your unit.
5. If there are no exit signs, let the management know and insist that they put them up.
6. Make sure you know the two alternative fire exits in the building.
7. There must be two staircases at each level: one next to the elevator and one on the opposite end of the corridor.
8. Get to know the fire escape routes in the building. If you are unaware of such escape routes, talk to the management and insist that signs are put up to notify the residents.
9. If the exit or the escape route is blocked, take the necessary steps to clear the path.
10. Do not place anything out of your unit to prevent the obstruction of the walkway in case of emergencies.
11. Finally, brief your kids and other family members on fire safety and escape route in case of emergencies.
