Malaysians urged to participate in Census 2020 online
PETALING JAYA: Malaysians who have yet to take part in the 2020 Malaysian Population and Housing Census are encouraged to enrol online through the e-Census.

As of Jan 28, the Statistics Department revealed that a total of 22.7 million residents or 69.4% out of Malaysia’s 32.7 million population have yet to register for the survey.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin says that it was important that all Malaysians were included in the Census 2020 to ensure inclusiveness in the future of the country, as well as to attain prosperity for all.

“On the 207th day (Jan 28) of the census, around 10 million residents or 30.4% out of Malaysia’s 32.7 million population have registered under the 2020 Malaysian Population and Housing Census online or e-Census.

“A total of 3.3 million households have also been polled, ” he said.

Mohd Uzir said the department had reopened the e-Census online platform to ensure every Malaysian was able to take part in the survey.

“This initiative was also done to support the government’s efforts in containing the spread of Covid-19, ” he said during the tabling of Census 2020 initial findings which was streamed live on the Statistics Department’s Facebook page on Friday.

Uzir added that there were 320,000 households comprising 1.2 million residents who have registered for e-Census but have yet to complete it.

Therefore, he urged Malaysians to complete their e-Census as soon as possible to reduce face-to-face contact.

Uzir, who is also the Census 2020 Commissioner, said among the states recording the highest completion rates were the Federal Territory of Putrajaya (91%), Johor (48.2%) and Perlis (45%) while Sabah recorded the lowest rate at 8.9%.

The Federal Territory of Labuan recorded 17.6%, Sarawak (18.9%), Melaka (38.9%), Penang (38%), Negri Sembilan (35.2%), Terengganu (32.5%), Selangor (31.4%), Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (28.4%), Kelantan (27.3%), Kedah (25.8%) and Pahang (24%).

“Of the 10 million respondents, 50.1% are female while 49.9% are male, so there is a balanced gender distribution.

“Meanwhile, the age group cohort analysis found 6.3% of respondents are aged 65 and above, working age of between 15 and 64 years old (69.5%), and zero to 14 years old (24.3%), ” Mohd Uzir said.

Besides that, the total respondents also comprised 67.1% from the bumiputra group, followed by Chinese (26%), Indians (6.3%), others (0.6%) and non-Malaysians (2.3%).

“All residents are urged to participate in Census 2020 to ensure no one is left behind. The country’s success and the prosperous lives that we enjoy today are a result of information distribution from the previous censuses, ” he said.
