Zuraida: New people's housing project to be rebranded Rumah Malaysia starting this year

JOHOR BARU: The new People's Housing Project (PPR), which has been approved, will be rebranded as Rumah Malaysia starting this year.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin (pic) said the build-up area of the Rumah Malaysia units would also be standardised nationwide.
She said the new unit would have a 900 sq ft floor plan from the existing PPR units which ranged from 650 sq ft to 750 sq ft.
"We are in the midst of reviewing the monthly rental for the Rumah Malaysia unit taking into account the bigger floor space," said Zuraidah.
She said this in a press conference after the virtual handing over of house keys to residents of Taman Seri Molek Perdana, Plentong and PPR Taman Perling Johor Baru at a hotel here.
Zuraidah said under the new policy, those renting the Rumah Malaysia units would have to vacate the place after two years.
She said the time given was for the tenants to start saving money to buy their own house.
"However, we might extend the tenancy agreement to another year on a case-to-case basis," said Zuraidah.
She added that the move would give a chance for other people who need to rent a house at an affordable rate before they are able to buy their own house.
Zuraidah said the government has approved 11 Rumah Malaysia projects this year nationwide with 4,120 units.
