Johor starts rapid bus transit system to boost public transport use
ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (IMBRT) system is expected to encourage the use of public transport among the people here, says Johor Mentri Besar, Datuk Hasni Mohammad (pic).

He said apart from using green technology and a practical ticketing system, IMBRT also priorities safety and comfort.

“We know there are things to improve when it comes to public transportation here, be it the Muafakat Johor Bus or other existing public transportation.

“Those issues have been taken into consideration by the state government when developing IMBRT.

“This includes punctuality, quality, safety and the price of its tickets, ” he said after launching IMBRT’s pilot project here yesterday.

Hasni added BRT ticket prices will be at an affordable level to encourage more people to use public transportation.

“The price of the tickets will be set in accordance to the financial capability of the people, ” he said at the event that also saw the presence of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, Johor Works, Transportation and Infrastructures committee chairman Solihan Badri and state secretary Datuk Azmi Rohani.

Meanwhile, Ismail said the IMBRT is expected to increase the use of public transportation in Iskandar Malaysia from 15% currently to 40% in 2025.

“By 2025, about 90% of Iskandar Malaysia would be covered with a public transportation system, from the existing 39%.

“We also expect the use of public transportation in the area to increase by 40% the same year, ” he said, noting the system covers a network length of 2,043km through 44 direct routes and 55 feeder routes.

“As the backbone of the public transportation here, the IMBRT will further improve mobility for the public, ” he said.

The pilot programme using a combination of electric and diesel buses will run for three months, with buses from nine suppliers plying a 4km-route at the Sultan Iskandar Highway between Anjung Nusajaya and Horizon Hills.

The media was given an exclusive preview of the buses on Tuesday.
