8 Conlay's full completion would depend on talks between the contractor and the developer
The conclusion of a discussion between the contractor and the developer of Kuala Lumpur's 8 Conlay might now specify when the entire mixed development will be completed.

On August 16, 2022, Damai City Sdn Bhd (DCSB), the project's principal contractor and a subsidiary of GDB Holdings Bhd (GDB), served a suspension notice to DCSB over the project's works.

DCSB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of KSK Land Sdn Bhd, which in turn is a wholly-owned unit of KSK Group Bhd, the developer of 8 Conlay in Kuala Lumpur city centre.

Grand Dynamic received an RM1.25 billion contract from DCSB in late 2020 to complete the mixed development project's construction.

8 Conlay is an RM5.4 billion mixed-use development that is known as the tallest twisted twin residential building in the world.

The project includes a five-star luxury hotel, The Kempinski Hotel Kuala Lumpur (Tower C), a lifestyle retail platform, and two towers of branded residences (Tower A and Tower B), both of which have an eye-catching tilt. The branded residences are known as YOO8 serviced by Kempinski.

GDB said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday that the suspension notice is pursuant to and within the terms stipulated in the agreement and contract.

"Both GDBSB and DCSB are in talks to resolve the matter amicably. The company will make the necessary announcement upon any significant development," the construction firm said.

According to current reports, the project's construction has been put on hold.

KSK Land, however, had refuted claims that there are financial issues with the project.

The developer said in a statement that its shareholders were still fully committed to 8 Conlay.

It claimed that despite pandemic difficulties, the YOO8 Branded Residences had made steady progress.

"Tower A is currently at 60.31 per cent completion with 100 per cent completion of structural work and 85 per cent of architectural work as of August 3, 2022," it said.

The company expects the completion of YOO8 Tower A by early 2023 and subsequently, YOO8 Tower B by the end of 2023.

"This will be followed by the completion of the retail podium, expected within the first half of 2023 while the 8 Conlay Kempinski Hotel is expecting completion within the first half of 2024," it added.

Before the pandemic, the 8 Conlay project had been targeted for completion by late 2020.

KSK Land celebrated Tower A's structural completion on November 18, last year.

Joanne Kua, managing director of KSK Land at the time, told reporters that she expected Tower A to be delivered by the end of 2022, Tower B to be finished by the middle of 2023, the Kempinski hotel by the end of 2023, and the retail podium by the beginning of 2023.

Tower A and Tower B were 80 per cent and 40 per cent taken up, respectively, at that time.

Tower A will feature 68 floors, compared to 57 and 72 floors for Towers B and C, respectively.
