Sheng Tai International diversifies into fashion to complement its real estate holdings
Sheng Tai International (STI), a real estate, development, and hospitality company, is expanding into the fashion business.
Datuk Leong Sir Ley, its president and chairman, said that the move will provide jobs and possibilities for models, fashion and textile designers, make-up artists, hairdressers, stylists, and others, thereby helping to build the sector both in Malaysia and worldwide.
If you're wondering why a property developer has gone to fashion, consider The Sail Melaka, the company's iconic development and the crown jewel in their portfolio.
The Sail comprises nine towers, each dedicated to initiatives such as fashion and health, art and culture, artificial intelligence, and more in a cutting-edge setting.
The latest initiative by STI is part of Leong's continuous aim to make Melaka a global fashion destination.
She emphasised that fashion is more than just clothes and beauty; it is also tied to wellness.
"I am a great believer that fashion and wellness are interconnected. Taking a thoughtful approach to clothing and style can contribute to physical, emotional, and social well-being. I believe people not only need to look good but feel good as well, and our quest to find models who represent the beauty in real people is so important.
"At the same time, being able to grow and nurture this industry, turning passion and ambition into real jobs and money, is important too and brings wealth and work into this country," she said.
STI recently held a casting call to find the next generation of models.
In addition to Leong, the judges panel included Liam Yiu, the new chief operating officer of the STI-owned in-house fashion portal Straits Designers' Gallery, which features apparel from both local and foreign designers.
"I am delighted to see so many people who want to be part of this dream. In fashion today, there is also a growing trend to align beauty with wellness values. It's exciting that we can come together today to open doors," said Yiu.
