Crackdown on commercial properties turned into 'bird's nests' rooms to continue
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Local Government Development has warned that the crackdown on commercial properties that have been converted into tiny rental rooms resembling 'bird's nests' will continue.

Minister Nga Kor Ming said investigations revealed that some residential unit owners carried out renovations on their property without seeking permission from the authorities.

To avoid the risks of fire hazards, property owners must follow the guidelines and specifications set by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department as well as the relevant local authorities, he said.

He said that action would be taken to enforce the law and protect people and property.

Among the actions to be imposed are issuing fire hazard removal notices under Section 8 of Act 341 (Fire Services Act 1988) and providing an appropriate period for the premises owner to comply.

Failure to comply would result in an investigation for possible prosecution, he said, according to Bernama.

Nga was speaking after participating in yesterday's Fire Hazard Prevention Operation (MBK) in Taman Maluri.

The MBK operation was carried out after the premises owner, who rented out tiny rooms in Taman Maluri, failed to comply with a five-day-old notice issued by the authorities for illegal renovations to the premises.
