KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- Seven hundred landslides and slope failures were reported this year, the majority due to the extraordinary heavy rainfall, the Dewan Negara was told today.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said 410 of the landslides took place along the corridor of federal roads and the remaining 290 along state roads.
She was replying to a question by Senator Datuk S. Vigneswaran on the action taken by the authorities to overcome the problem of landslides.
Replying to a supplementary question by Vigneswaran, Rosnah said the Public Works Department, the Meteorological Services Department and the Drainage and Irrigation Department were jointly developing a landslide early warning system for high-risk slopes.
The objective of the cooperation is to study the empirical relationship between the rainfall pattern and intensity which caused landslides.
"The overall landslide warning system is expected to be ready by 2018," she said.
Rosnah explained the measures being taken to slopes and hillsides along highways and federal roads.
She also said that a mapping exercise by the Public Works Department showed there were 4,851 high-risk slopes along federal roads and highways nationwide.
