Natural gas prices to go up, residential users spared

PETALING JAYA: Gas Malaysia Bhd said that the government has revised the natural gas tariff for the non-residential non-power sector in Peninsular Malaysia effective Jan 1, 2016.
"This revision is in line with the national rationalisation plan whereby the adjustment to the price of piped gas will take place every six months with the implementation of the gas cost pass through (GCPT) mechanism," it told Bursa Malaysia yesterday.
Gas Malaysia said the average gas tariff has been increased by 17.11% to RM25.53/mmbtu (million British Thermal Units) from RM21.80/mmbtu. The previous tariff adjustment was done on June 8, 2015.
However, it noted that there will be no change to the selling prices for residential customers at RM19.52/mmbtu.
Gas Malaysia shares was unchanged to close at RM2.24 yesterday with 33.13 million shares done.
The government announced earlier this month that heavy power users, those consuming more using 300kWh a month, would receive lower rebates for their electricity bill, after it decided to increase the base tariff for piped gas from RM15.20/mmBTU to RM18.20/mmBTU, resulting in higher gas cost."
