PJ residents cash in on council’s rat campaign
Residents are cashing in on Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) rat catching campaign launched earlier this month.

To date, MBPJ has collected 314 rats from the public in Bukit Gasing in a campaign that will last until March 31. The council is offering RM3 for each rodent caught, dead or alive.

Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran was surprised at the response so far.

“It has been more than two weeks and we have collected more rats than expected,” he said.

“This is a very good start to the campaign and we want see more rodents being brought to our collection centres.”

Rajiv, who initiated the programme, hopes they will be able to reach their target of 1,500 rats by its end next month.

“Last year, for the whole of Petaling Jaya the council managed to collect 2,000 rats using various methods. We hope to see more people participating in this campaign.”

The Malaysian Insider reported that MBPJ had opened two counters for rat collection on Jalan Othman, Section 1, Old Town from 9am to 10am and at the Pasar Section 17/1a from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

Rajiv had said that MBPJ was offering quite a lucrative reward for the rats.

“It doesn’t matter how many are caught, we will pay cash on the spot for the rodents.”

“MBPJ will be collecting the rats and disposing of them. I will be on the ground to check up on collections from time to time.”

Rajiv had said that the campaign was started because MBPJ had received 245 complaints from 2013 to January 2016, while the council caught 3,396 rats in 2014 and 2,003 rats last year.

Rajiv also said that MBPJ would be coming down hard on business operators in commercial areas who failed to utilise their bins.

We will issue compounds of RM250 if we find the operators dumping their garbage indiscriminately.
