GEORGE TOWN: Several residents at the Sandilands Foreshore area off Jalan CY Choy here are crying foul after finding out they will not be receiving compensation for leaving their homes for a housing project.

Tay Kooi Chooi, 54, said she was extremely upset when she was told by the office of assemblyman Lau Keng Ee that she will not be compensated for her home where three generations of her family have stayed.

She said she was told the reason compensation will not be given to her was because the house was in the name of another person and not her grandfather.

"I want a better reason, this is not a concrete excuse,"" she said at a press conference today.

Another disgruntled resident was Chng Lay Choo, 63, who said she only knew about having to move out from a neigbhour who told her recently.

"No one has approached me on this matter, I hope a meeting can be arranged with the state government and the developer to sort this out,"" she said adding the notice they received was to move out by the end of March.

The 1.7ha plot where 54 squatter homes are located has been earmarked for an affordable housing project comprising units priced between RM72,500 to RM400,000.

The project reportedly will have 482 medium-cost units, 321 low-medium cost units and commercial facilities with 150 units allocated for the squatter families.

At the same press conference, Barisan Nasional (BN) Tanjong division chief Oh Tong Keong urge the state government to delay the eviction as the Qing Ming Festival was coming.

He, along with MCA Tanjong Youth chief Lim Swee Bok, urged the residents be given fair compensation for their homes.

When contacted by the media, Penang Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh said residents could meet with him to find ways to resolve the matter.
