Parliament: Government Should Freeze State Land To Build Affordable Homes - MP
A Member of Parliament today suggested that the government freeze state land or land owned by government linked companies (GLC) in order to build affordable houses.

Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Zahari (BN-Setiawangsa) said the measure will help the people, especially the younger generation, to buy affordable houses.

"Although the government has met its 50 percent target of building one million affordable houses, many more Malaysians still cannot afford to buy houses due to the rising cost of living.

"There is also a need to control the construction of luxury homes by developers to avoid long term impact on the construction of affordable houses,"" he said when debating a motion of thanks to Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his opening address in the Dewan Rakyat, here Wednesday.

The government was also urged to build second generation People's Housing Projects (PPR) comprising units measuring 850 square feet compared to the first generation PPR of only 650 square feet, for better comfort.

A study should be done on the building technology used by developed countries to reduce the cost of construction while not compromising safety and quality.

"When the cost of construction can be reduced, then the prices of houses can also be reduced to make them affordable for the lower and middle income groups."

Ahmad Fauzi also touched on the Goods and Services Tax (GST), including a mechanism to trace traders who used it as an excuse to hike the prices of goods.

"The GST is good as it helps the government to collect revenue to cover for the falling price of oil," he added.
