Penang Wants Fed Govt To Recalibrate Ceiling Price For Affordable Houses

The Penang government Monday called on the federal government to reduce the ceiling price for the 1Malaysia People's Housing Program (PR1MA) from RM400,000 to RM300,000.
Its executive council member, Jagdeep Singh Deo said there was no rational nor justification for the ceiling price of PR1MA to continue to be at RM400,000 as the ceiling price for affordable houses by the private sector had been to RM300,000.
He said that at the recently concluded meeting of the monitoring working committee on the implementation of the National Housing Council's decision, Penang agreed that the ceiling price be fixed at RM300,000.
"If the private sector can do so, why not the federal government? Surely, as a government we must not have profit in mind and we should have the interests of the people at heart and in our minds," he told a press conference, here.
Jagdeep Singh said the state government had received applications to built 5,031 units of PRIMA houses, but all the applications had not been approved. The applications were for the building of 1,520 units in Batu Ferringhi, Bukit Gelugor (1,124) and Tasek Gelugor (2,387), he said.
"The application in Batu Ferringhi has been postponed to allow PR1MA to revise its pricing downwards from RM400,000 to RM300,000, while the other applications have only just been submitted and will be duly considered upon all technical approvals," he added.
