Kuala Baram Housing Project Delay Due To Soil Problems - Johari
The three- year delay in the construction of Kuala Baram's mixed housing project, which includes 241 affordable houses, undertaken by the state goverment is due to soil stability problem.

Sarawak's Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the developer had to change the site of the housing project to a nearby area as the stability of the soil in the original location could create a major issue when the project was completed.

"We do not want cracks to appear after the project is completed," he told reporters after attending a briefing on the project here today.

He said the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the developer of the affordable homes (Malay acronym RMR), is in the midst of completing infastructure works such as roads leading to the housing project.

Abang Johari said after the completion of the infrastructure works, the developer would build the 241 RMR units, expected to cost RM30 million.

"The actual cost of RMR housing project is more than RM150,000 including the land price, but we are selling at RM50,000 per unit targetting for those in the low-income group," he added.

He said RMR housing projects were built due to high demand for affordable homes in cities, which presently were deemed too expensive for the low-income group.

He said after the completion of the Kuala Baram RMM housing project within two-years, HDC would be building 549 medium-cost houses category in the 40- hectare project area.

Among the facilities available in the area are a two-storey hypermarket, commercial shophouses and a community hall.
