An Important Checklist for New House Buyers
27 Jan 2016
If you are fortunate to be buying yourself a new home, whether it is a newly constructed place or a second hand house, you have to take certain precautionary steps to ensure that your house is safe and fit to be lived in. There are some simple steps that appear easy, but are extremely necessary for any new home owner.
Therefore, it is imperative that you first go through this checklist we recommend so that nothing is amiss in your new home. The list pertains more to the physical aspect of the house, covering room to room. Performing these tasks before you move any of your furniture or belongings in will be easier and will definitely ensure your prolonged comfort in the long run.
Upon moving in:
1) Check the air vents in all the rooms
Make sure that all the vents that allow air into your home are cleared of dust and obstructions. This is going to be important so that fresh air can enter your home easily and the air is clean, not chock full of dust. It will also be important so that a breeze can enter and flow through your house to cool it down.
2) Replace any air filter in air conditioners
If you have any air filtering devices and air conditioners in your new home, make sure you replace the filter with a new and clean one. This will ensure the air conditioner or air filters will function more efficiently and consume less energy.
3) Check all toilets, under sinks and faucets
Ensure that all plumbing is functioning and fix any leaks before you begin moving in. This way, you’ll save on your water bill as you’ve gotten everything functioning before you start using them, rather than before.
4) Change any old locks
For security purposes, do not re-use any of the old locks provided as there may be copies of keys lying around or with other people. Get new locks and even change door knobs if possible. Make copies of the keys for the new locks for your family members.
5) Develop a regular maintenance list
This list should include areas to check for damage and things that need regular cleaning, like drains and gutters. They should also include changing new filters, batteries and the like.
6) Update the security system
Change passwords and codes for your house’s security system, if any and make sure to put new batteries into the alarms and sensors. While you’re doing this, check on your home’s fire detection and sprinkler system, if there are any to ensure that they are functioning alright and that the liquid has not dried up.
7) Identify emergency escape routes
Make sure you know from day one where all the exits are so you can go to the nearest one should anything happen.
