Malaysia sees higher foreign direct investments in the third quarter

KUALA LUMPUR, NOV 27, 2015:
Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) in Malaysia improved to RM500.2 billion in the third quarter of 2015 from RM477.4 billion registered in the second quarter of this year.
The manufacturing sector continued to be the highest direct investment recipient at 43.4% – followed by financial and insurance (20.9%) and information and communication (9.4%).
The top three source countries for FDIs were Singapore, Japan and Netherlands, the Department of Statistics said in a statement.
The value of Malaysian-owned assets abroad continued to exceed the value of foreign-owned assets in Malaysia, whereby the total financial asset position rose RM183.2 billion to a record RM1.71 trillion from RM1.53 trillion registered in Q2.
Meanwhile, total liabilities increased RM71.1 billion to RM1.57 trillion from RM1.5 trillion in Q2.
Direct investments recorded a net asset position of RM101.4 billion at the end of Q3 2015, an increase of RM56.4 billion from the previous quarter.
Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) stock increased by RM79.2 billion to post RM601.6 billion in the third quarter versus RM522.3 billion recorded in the second quarter with the top DIA destinations being Singapore, Indonesia and Canada.
“As for portfolio investments, it showed a net liabilities position of RM299.7 billion – an improvement from a contraction of RM336.9 billion registered in the second quarter.”
“The portfolio investment assets rose to RM308.4 billion from RM274.6 billion at end of previous quarter,” the statistics department said.
Meanwhile, the total stock value of portfolio investment liabilities decreased by RM3.4 billion to RM608.1 billion against RM611.5 billion in Q2.
The international reserves of Bank Negara Malaysia increased RM17.0 billion in the third quarter to RM415.1 billion from RM398.1 billion recorded in the second quarter.
